Friends

19 September 2008

The quality and direction of our lives is dependent on friends. Our friends mean so much to us. They are the people who are physically there for us when we're down, and there to share the joys of our lives too. Sometimes they seem to have a greater influence than anyone else, even God...

True friends, are those who accept you just the way you are, but will not leave you as you are. They are committed to the friend than the friendship and will not shrink back even if it costs the friendship. They strengthen their friends in God and remind them about his promises.

My friend once said, "life is like a bus, people of all sorts come, and go. not everyone will journey with you till the end" Hmmm...

Sometimes I wonder: If life is so short in the first place, how are we supposed to tell the true friends from the not-so-true-but-nice-to-have friends when genuine friendship has to go through the test of time? How do we know if they will journey with us till the end?

Trust is a thing that is hard to gain and easy to lose.

Fear is universal in man. To be afraid to die, be scared to fall, be anxious of failing, be afraid to... If man was born without fear, the big question is, why does fear exist? A new born child who never knew how to walk, was never afraid of falling in his or her endeavour to take the first stride. A new born child was never apprehensive for taking that second step, that third, that fourth... Now, it seems that the bigger question would be that if we never understood the concept of failing, we would not fear?

There are those in this world who have fears which they are unable to overcome, perhaps because of a bad experience that happened to them in the past or because of what they envisage themselves in. Surely, the natural way would be to avoid such an experience. Sometimes it does prove as the better solution. Fear does confine us as it prevents us from doing the things we could have done, if not for fear. It limits us to certain ways of life, governs our sense of freedom and creates perimeters to our happiness. Arguing along this slant, fear spurs discontentment in our lives.

However, we can see it from the other side of the coin too. As we grow in our lives, we gain knowledge from this world. When we learn and realise that there are some things in life that we should not do for they are detrimental to us, we fear. But in this case, it is something more than just fear. It is wisdom. We do fear, but because we are sensible beings and we know the distinction between right and wrong, and therefore, avoid wrong moves and make the right ones. Contrary to what many may think that fear prevents us from becoming better people, sometimes, it may just take that bit of fear to make us realise our mistakes and learn from them.

Fear may be the driving force in people to achieve what they want in life too. Students mugging and striving so hard for a job in the future provide the stark evidence. Why do they want to work so hard and some to the extent of burning the midnight oil? Most of them work their way up to secure a job in the future, so that they will not 'lose out' in the coming years of their lives. Otherwise, they will not have a 'future', as what many parents threaten their children with.

I would not deny that studying hard to get a good degree, a stable job, one will be assured a bright future. But is that the meaning of it all? Is it just because we fear? Or is it wisdom then?

Taking fear to the context of terrorism, it causes the proliferation of pandemonium when an unanticipated terrorist attack transpires. It creates havoc everywhere as people are unsure of what to do, where to go, and what to expect. There is no way of forseeing things just by our two black circles on our face. Such occurrences can happen anytime, and anywhere. In times like these, the victims, or people prone to these attacks, have fear. It is the commanality among the susceptible. Fear serves as the empirical evidence that man is a vulnerable being.

Fear offers an unending story to be told. If fear can be a feeling that unites us during uncertainty, a feeling that motivates us towards success, and that there are other things that have the same impact on us, why don't we embrace such other things?

What are they?

Courage. Faith. Love.

Bridge to Terabithia

In this life, there are some people who light up your life and brings you out of your darkness, the darkness that you have been too comfortable in for too long. A smile, a greeting, a hello, or a goodbye may just brighten up your day.

There's so much in this life to seek for, and so much to learn. But we sometimes fail to treasure the very things that we have been blessed with. Perhaps only until it passes our eyes, will we realise how much it means.

And when it's time to let go, we should always see that there's something more in life to be appreciated :)
