Slow down

http://aslpict.blogsome.com/wp-admin/images/slow_down.jpg

Slow down,
slow down...

No more burdens,
no more frowns,

Just a little while
To get outta this town

I don't need silver,
Gold, nor crown

I need some time to just
Slow down.

I awoke at 12.30pm today, 6 hours late from the time that I was supposed to be up and about. After brushing up, I was at the comp for 8 hours.

Shooting, Music Ministry, SAAS, TUG, School, files?

Slow down man...

Chinese New Year 2009

Jia you yi lao, ru you yi bao.

Chinese New Year was alright. My aunt lent us her car so that it would ease our traveling. It was super crammed up in the car. Can you imagine, eight people squeezing into a five-seater car? Haha, I think a few years ago, squeezing ourselves into a vehicle like that was not too bad. I wouldn't say it was good. This time, well, all of us are bigger! Back pain sia...

We went to six places on the first day. One of the places was my mum's cousin's relative's house at Neptune Court.

I think that somethings are just not right during Chinese New Year. School seizes this opportunity to give us more homework because they think that it's a good time to catch up on our work, being a public holiday and a long weekend. Well I seriously hope that at least for once, some respect for tradition shall be shown. So much has been done to preserve Singapore's heritage through means of shows like the recently popular "Little Nyonya". But what actually is happening here?

Alright, perhaps smaller families or families with fewer relatives to visit would think that it is okay having homework over these two days. But I think not. There are people with relatively larger families too! Urgh. Although we managed to visit quite a few families and relatives, the time that we spend there isn't long enough for us to reunite.

Physical reunion will never outbeat the emotional reunion.

Sigh.

I thought that it was kinda demeaning- to do homework during Chinese New Year. Some of my friends had forgone their plans to visit relatives and why? To finish up on their mountain-load of homework. I'm not totally against the pragmatism in this particular practice, but please, spare a thought for us, and give us less.

What are holidays for? Isn't it a time to relax and recuperate? "Holiday homework" is but an oxymoron.

Pardon me for my words. I just feel rather frustrated.

Some relatives seemed like strangers to me already.

"Who are they? Have I seen them before?"

Figuratively speaking, I felt claustrophobic inside. Chinese New Year was something pretty on the outside, but apparently, I'm trapped from experiencing it's full beauty.

It was so restricted to me...

"Well, that was it," I thought. "My Chinese New Year."

It wasn't over.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I tried to find some other meaning and something worth remembering and learning from this yearly occasion. Yeah, amidst the frustration though.

On Tuesday night, I was at my granduncle's place for dinner. We had nyonya dishes and devil's curry; a sumptious dinner it was. :)

My granduncle's name is Alan. Granduncle Alan. Or more commonly addressed as Sa-chek Kong. He would come by to the table and recite quotes that he painstakingly memorised by heart. He would then test us to see if we knew who said that line.

For instance, "Never negotiate out of fear and never fear to negotiate."

Who's line was it??

John F. Kennedy. :)

And there were some other quotes that he shared which he forgot who said them.

"A tongue is like a sharp knife, it kills without drawing blood.
But a wholesome tongue is a tree of life."

Sa-chek Kong asked also, "What is life's greatest gift?"

My dad was seated at the side of my table too. All three of us were silent and deep in thought. Then came granduncle Lawrence.

He said, "BEER."

LOL! It was out of the blue.

He'd have his two-bits worth into what we're talking about too. Funny granduncle.

Eventually, sa-chek kong gave me the two sheets of hand-written quotes. They are treasures to me. I'll post them when the time is right.

Before we left, this was what he said that left the Chinese New Year 09 mark on me:

"Thank you for listening to me."

I think it is what we should all do whenever we have the chance to meet up with our loved ones, more so for the older generations. They have much to share with you, all it takes is patience, and a listening ear.

Jia you yi lao, ru you yi bao.

Thank you God.

J.C.

May God always be our guide in words, thoughts, and actions.

------------------------------------------------

So I eventually went for the Shooting BBQ at Clarence's house. While waiting for 966, the sky looked dark but amidst that was light. Thank you God for the gift of sight.

On the bus, there came an elderly lady who boarded the bus. She looked normal to me and everything seemed alright as I listened to my mp3.

"Tap what tap! People don't have card cannot issit??! You don't know how to think ah. You don't know how to think!"
yelled the lady from a few seats back.

My. That jolted me out of my music. Apparently, the lady didn't tap her card and to the bus driver, it looked as if she showed utter disregard about paying the bus fares.

Well, the bus driver was quite composed still and asked the lady to tap her card otherwise everyone will be kept waiting on the bus.

"Tap what tap! You really don't know how to think!" shouted the lady as the coins went clanking down the ticketing machine.

I think it was quite a bad day for her already. Then perhaps it just took a little spark to "pop the hydrogen-concentrated lady". All of us would have our bad days too, sometime or other. Who knows? Maybe all it took was for someone to give her a warm and sincere smile to brighten up her day. :D

-------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, I changed to bus 16 and made my way down to Siglap area. I alighted a little too early and had to walk quite a little. Heading towards Siglap Centre, I dropped by Cold Storage to get some stuff and then continued walking.

Hmmmm...

Yeah, I suppose this was the part where I got lost. :p Unknowingly, I hiked all the way up along terraces and passed Elite Towers!! Argh. Luckily there was a couple and a lady somewhere at the side of the road who were making a sales agreement. Feeling rather directionless, I approached them and asked where I should go. Not only did they give me the right directions, they offered to ride me all the way there.

:D

Thank God!

As I got into the car, the female seller remarked "Eh I better remember yall just in case you murder him."

Hahahaha!

I didn't die though. :p

The couple asked for $2.50 jokingly too.

------------------------------------------------------

I had a nice time catching up with my seniors at the barbecue. :) J4s and J3s comprised them. I was quite disappointed by the turn up by the J2s, especially with those who didn't have a real excuse for not going to the barbecue. Hmmm... Having gatherings like these are for socialising with people whom you may not have met before, and catching up with those you know. The reasons for not going should never be because of close friends not going.

I get lots of this question "Who is going for the barbecue?"

I hope you all understand.

Anyway...

I heard all the army stories and experiences that my seniors shared with one another. They mentioned all the trannies and the transformers. Hahaha and Tingwei's actions and accents were the best.

I thought about how it will be for me in about a year's time in NS...

There was a lot of food there man, chicken kebabs, mutton satays, chicken satays, stingray, sotong, cheese sausages, steak, buffalo wings, barbecued wings, fried rice, etc.

Clarence forgot to buy marshmallows so Sean came up with a delicious substitute, barbecued french toast! :D AWESOME. Crispy on the outside, buttery and soft on the inside.

And we wanted to throw Sinyean into the pool but I guess it was running late already. (awwww) That's the BBQ ritual. Lol.

Don, Sinyean, Nic. ARM!!!! :D

And finally...

Great day. :)

Set Sail

http://www.pyracantha.com/images/924%20Orange%20Sail.jpg

Man, it's finally over.

I was 22 hours awake on the 21st, PTM ended at nine plus and I had supper with my mum. I was so dead-tired by then. Only found this quote interesting.

"Without God, we cannot.
Without us, God will not."

During times of trouble, we offer stuff up to prayer, but it also takes us and our hard work to get where we want to.

Like what was shared during Amplify by Josie:

"Spiritual discipline is like a sail boat, and we have to prepare the sail. But we are utterly under the control of the wind."

God is the wind and we are the sail boats.

Have we set sail yet?

---------------------------------------------------------

Chinese New Year celebrations was hilarious. Haha, this was ODAC's performance last year, 09 isn't out yet.

We're the only batch of JC2s that can have CNY Concert in the PAC 2 times. Later, we had the tossing of yusheng in the canteen. Yeah, and I got caked by SOME PEOPLE! Hahaha pok got double-sided by Rich and Chun Yong and the tissue paper was still on his face while chasing Rich. LOL!

Rich and I went back to ZHSS but there weren't any other 4e1s there. Guess everyone was dismissed late. :/ They made many changes to ZHSS like the most obvious one being the mega fan in the hall.

Ended the day off with Amplify with Joel, crapped around with people there and went to 401 for supper.

Finally over with the tiring week.

So close yet so far

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2189/2279253649_e571f2b7ec.jpg?v=1203541910

You know this guy? He's Obama.

One Black American Managing Americans. Lol no offence. :p

Anyway, today's the inauguration of Obama as the first black president. There shouldn't be any hardcore racists today anymore. Being a black American doesn't make him less capable of bringing a country at its lowest points to greater heights.

However, what defines a ruler is the things that lie within him- his values, his beliefs and hopefully, God, for all goodness comes from Him. :)

-------------------------------------------------------

Today's mass PE was a great start of physical fitness activity for this year! Woooh shiok. We did two rounds around CJ within 11 minutes, and three sets of things like: standard pumping, diamond pumping, spider (wide-arm) pumping, supermans (reverse-crunches), star jumps, jumping jacks, leg tugs and sit ups. Last but not least, GST! Or less commonly known as... Grand Stand Torture. We did 10 sets of that. Yeah, 27 stadium steps. Up and down counts as one.

I miss my days of exercising at the fitness corner. Shiwei would usually accompany me down and we would train quite hard to meet personal goals. Joel would join us if he was free too. Since we didn't have any gym facilities any nearby, that fitness corner sufficed. We made use of what there was and invented our own exercises. xD Stuff like vertical sit-ups, tiger pumping...

That was when all the discipline came I suppose. No matter how busy we were, we would still make the effort down at around 5pm to exercise. Hmm.. Well that was secondary school training. We'd come down for exercise in primary school too.

-thinks-

Years passed, and here we are, busier than ever. Much has happened to each of us, and keeping a routine is what we are lacking in already. I remember that if I did not get exercise one day, I'd feel tired and I would get some strange feeling.

Sigh.

It's like A-B-C, and yet, so close yet so far. In JC, hardly anyone I know lives near me. As in the really really near.

"Long-distance relationships do not last" is what I usually come across. But perhaps I guess there's a twist to this theory. If long distance is referred to as the physical proximity between people, then I believe that there's a way that the relationship would last. Maybe whoever wrote that meant "long distance" as the things that come in the way of the relationship.

Eventually it will be the effort and commitment that is put into the relationship or friendship to blossom and become something spectacular.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I've solved my knee problem for shooting as well. :)

H-Card

My H-card. :D one shot off the 8 ring though.

I got some homework done during the intervals today, we started the day off with bio. :D that seriously upped everyone's energy level. mr yeow's teachings are all spiced and juiced up with humour.

I went immediately to the shooting range after that. 15 shots was what I did today, with about 45+ minutes of dry firing in total.

One card of 10, another of 5.

I'll get there very soon. 580s.

Chinatown

"Chinatown"- the word of the day.

I served mass 9am with Joel and Josh Kline. It's a while since we did. :)

Oh and I went for family outing at Chinatown, Yum Cha dim sum restaurant!

Yupp! It's the place that my friends and I went to gobble everything up the other time. :D hehe.. But I didn't eat that much cos it's a family/godparents (my brother's) outing and there wasn't much motivation or record to break, but tried something new this time.

Mango-pomelo bombardo!

It was a good meet up with my godsisters too.

[pictures pending]

I took a nap and then went to lau PA sat with Joel and Josh. LOL. Somehow the Shenton crowd wasn't there and the mood was gloomy. We had Fatman satay and Hong Kong noodles. I guess times are really bad in this economic crisis. Hmmm... But everything seemed so quiet.

I ate 31 sticks of chicken satay and a few mutton ones. Lol it tasted like honey rubber when it was at the halfway mark cos my tongue was numb to the taste by then. Quite like an over-kill. 60 cents/stick. Man...

Our total count was 87 though, short of 3. This was how it looked like:

Yupp, and we were satisfied. :D

Like duh.

We walked back to the Raffles Place MRT station. Okay, to be more correct, we TRIED to. Cos we got kinda...lost eventually. And this was the weird part. We walked pass a place with a setting was like what you had seen in "I am Legend". One car, with no one else present on the streets, with buildings towering all around you.

And guess what, we arrived at Chinatown mrt shortly after. Haha!

There I was, back to where I was earlier today.

Chinatown. :)

Week 2

This whole week has been a long one for me and looking at my schedule, next week doesn't seem any shorter. Chemistry remedial lessons may have to be overridden by trainings.

My revision for chemistry hasn't even started. By the way, I hardly got a grasp of what was taught last year. I'm not trying to be humble or a closet mugger here. It's not only chemistry. There are loads to remember for bio too. Maths, supposedly my best in secondary school, isn't at it's best here so far. Thankfully project work and hopefully Mother Tongue would be subjects I do not need to see this year. I haven't gotten the hang of econs too. Neither have I for G.P.

Last year we got quite close to winning medals and trophies for the team. I have to work much harder this year. SAFRA is now more packed with people. There is no "refractory period" for everyone else to train in school now that Nationals have been brought forward. Competition venue has been taken up. I guess I have to resort to late school trainings and walk-in details that start at 7.30pm. Besides, I would have to be there early to get a lane otherwise I'd be making a futile trip.

A walk-in detail would mean that I reach home about 10.30pm. Following that is time with God and family. I hope I can use the snippets of time I have from commuting to do up schedules, planning, homework and revision.

Wow.

Teachers are all making themselves available for consultation already. I am glad to have them so 'readily available'. Hmm. But I've got to do some catching up first I guess, can't afford to ask them for help without first getting some basics into my head.

A few days back, I went for an extra lesson. I was eager to learn and revise my concepts for that subject. When I plonked myself on the seat and sat next to my classmate, my teacher came by and told me this, "You are not here to talk to her."

What??! I took my time off to attend that lesson though I could have spent it on my own revising stuff myself and that was the remark that I received.

Wow.

There is a club bbq on the 24th, I know many of us have other outings and many more would want to study. I want to study too. But do I have a choice? If everyone can just come, I guess it would be more enjoyable and after that, we can all study.

Band meetings are hard to organise now. My members have as busy a schedule as I have. All three of us are presidents. Hah. I was hoping that perhaps twice in a month at least, and when we meet up, we must come prepared. All of us.

I can't give my full commitment to church band as yet either. As and when they really need manpower, that would be when I try to make it.

CJ needed people for their music ministry, I stepped up. Their meetings would be in the mornings before assembly. I pray that the Catholic spirit will be rekindled in all our hearts once again. Work seems to overshadow the importance of the spiritual facet of one's life.

A's are a few months away... Everyone's rushing, mugging, and strapping all their weapons and ammunition on themselves, preparing for the major battle of 2009. I'm like only armed with a dagger...

Man... At this moment, I really wish to become some super hero. Although it is just week 2, forseeing all the things that are yet to come makes me wish for something to overcome it later.

People here, people there... One thing after another not anymore because everything's concurrent.

I wish I could be omnipresent.

Abba Father, be my guide...

Disguise

http://www.likecool.com/Gear/Pic/Lego%20Disguise%20Mona%20Lisa/Lego-Disguise-Mona-Lisa.jpg

There are two people whom I know of aren't that similar to the most of us. In the world's eyes, they are categorised as the ones with a lower intellectual capability. My two friends will talk to me at times, and when they do, I would get a little uneasy and startled.

It is not so much because of the way they express themselves, but rather, that they may be Jesus in disguise...

Have you ever come across such people in your lives too? I bet you have. On the streets, in the mental asylum, and for some they are someone close. These people may seem crazy, mad, stupid, retarded, fugly... But aren't they also made from the image and likeness of God?

Why do we mock God then?

If a mentally challenged person walks up to you and talks to you, how would you respond? Would it be the way that you would respond to an animal?

These people seek understanding too, just like the way we would want to be understood by others.

Do you see Jesus in them?

Prayer

http://msp254.photobucket.com/albums/hh111/stokdeposu/Prayer.jpg

Don gave the talk for Amp today. My notes are kinda jumbled up though.. :/

How often do we pray a prayer? And when we do, would it be just mere lip-service?

Pray from the bottom of our hearts....

Busy are we everyday, and everywhere... Where is time for God?

We tend to find what's left of our time to give to God, when what He wants is for us to be with Him all the time.

Don't give God what's LEFT, but give Him what's RIGHT (everything).

Before we start our day, during the break of dawn, let us all say this prayer to offer up our day to God:

"Here I am Lord, may my words not be my words but your words. May my actions not be my actions but your actions. Use me Lord, as you will."

Starfish

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2352/2164682027_828a3bc7ae.jpg?v=0

My dad once told me a story. It was during one of those chats we had while we were commuting from a place to another. There were several versions to this story too. The original story was written by Loren Eisley. This was what my dad told me:

There was a boy who was walking along the sea shore one evening. As he strolled, he could hear the crashing of waves, see the beautiful sunset, and smell the relaxing sea breeze. It was his favourite past time.

http://www.pledgetoenddomesticviolence.org/uploaded_images/starfish-733525.jpg

While walking, he saw that there were many starfish that were swept onto the shore by the waves. The boy then picked them up, one by one, and cast them back into the ocean.

A man saw the boy from a distance, went up to him and asked him, "What are you doing young lad?"

"I'm throwing starfish back into the sea," the boy replied. "Otherwise they would all die when the tide is out."

"Why boy, do you know that there are too many starfish along this shore? What difference will it make?"

The boy picked up another starfish, smiled at the man, and spoke "It will make a difference to this one."

And he threw it back to the ocean.

Burnout

http://xboxoz360.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/burnout.jpg

To what people may think simple, there is a story behind it all.

There was once five friends. They were professional hikers who dreamt of climbing Everest. Together, they embarked on that arduous journey.

So it began.

The five fought their way up. Higher and higher, they confronted the bitter cold.

It was on the third day that a problem struck the five men. However, only one of them realised this. He went on to tell the rest of his friends that he thinks he cannot make it because his heart was aching really bad.

So with one less man, the remaining four decided to carry on.

The man who said he could not make it simply feigned heart-attack.

Hey, he was the strongest among the five in actual fact.

But why did he not continue the journey with the rest?

At this instant, I believe some of you would think that this guy here is a slacker. Am I right? Perhaps the rest would think that he is just chickening out.

You're wrong.

He left them because there was only enough food to sustain four men in that sort of blizzard.

------------------------------------------------------------

To what extent would you go for a stranger in need?

One day, as you were walking back home from school...

You heard a scream at the top of somebody's voice.

Astounded, you turned around.

My goodness.

Some twenty year old man was rammed by a cement mixer. On-lookers were too stunned to make a move.

You knew first-aid and you had your phone with you.

But, you were scared.

----------------------------------------------------

If you had the ability to make a change in someone else's life, would you step up and go for it? Or shrink back in fear?

What if that someone is your friend?

In our daily lives, we won't really get to experience such a dramatic scenario all the time. Yet, we are still faced with the same problem of whether we should reach out and help others or not.

Recognise that.

Doze

"Failing to plan, is planning to fail."

Alright, one more thing settled. :) My life's not fixed and dead, it's just that I'm more aware of the things that are going on around me.

Burning the candle at both ends is what I often do so as to not leave anything to the eleventh hour, thus, I make hay when the sun and moon shine. If you have a doze of this medicine, you will know what it's like to doze...off.

Yupp, it was an exhaustive day for me today. Couldn't believe that I was dozing off during the second lesson already...

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's something to share with whoever shall read this post. Hope it will help you guys be more aware of your habits and lead a healthier and brainy life! (I got it from somewhere where I don't remember though):

"10 BIGGEST BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS

  1. No Breakfast

People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.

  2. Over-eating

It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.

  3. Smoking

It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer's disease.

  4. High sugar consumption

Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.

  5. Air pollution

The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.

  6. Sleep deprivation

Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term sleep deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.

  7. Head covered while sleeping

Sleeping with the head covered, increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.

  8. Working your brain during illness

Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.

  9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts

Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.

  10. Talking rarely

Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain."

Hmm... As for talking rarely... Apparently geniuses like Albert Einstein and the fictional L don't really do so... Hmmm...

Figures.

Unlocked

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/44/110180313_9d45a91d61.jpg

Mr Marc Lim gave the leaders of Batam OCIP a CD each. :) I guess it was a farewell gift from him... On it wrote,

"Christopher

The leader withe the smile, who never stops! Go from strength to strength in'09

Mr Lim."

Well that was something inspirational to start off the new year in school.

Thank you Mr Lim.

------------------------------------------------------------

2009 unlocked.

I feel ready now, for whatever that will come my way.

With faith and courage, bring it on.

For One More Day

http://blogs.nlb.gov.sg/highbrowseonline/wp-content/uploads/images/BookCovers/mitch_albom_for_one_more_day.jpg

I'll be embarking on a new school journey in two days time. Somehow or other, this same phrase of "I don't think I'm ready yet" that would resonate every year. Don't you guys experience that too? It's like there's forever this little bit of thing that you have lacked and have not done.

Life appears to be a never-ending puzzle, where enough is never enough.

The desire to live, comes from the yearning to make a difference in this world. Conversely, the desire for death, would be the lost of that yearning. When we want to live and make a difference in this world, be it good or bad, we have found a meaning to live for another day. There is a direction for us to follow. By nature, humans are beings who are lost, who look for something to follow, and some purpose.

"Why are we here for?" is the question that people who seek meaning in life ask.

I suppose we could first look at who we are. What is our identity? If we are aware of who we are, we would then know who we are to follow. For those who are contemplating death, spare a thought just once more, and rediscover who you really are and what your identity is.

We are God's children, predestined for heaven.

If we were to die today, and we know it, are we ready? Or is there something more that we would want to do here on this Earth?

If you could live for one more day, how would you make a difference and touch the lives of others?

What would you do?

-----------------------------------------------------

Lately, I find that people just come into my life and many leave after that. You know it just happens so fast. Too fast for me to take another glance at them and understand them better. The times when I have with acquaintances are way short. Not all of them would eventually want to become friends, but it's alright. Guess all there is for us, not just me, is to empower each other and tell them of Him.

If I could make a difference in your life for a lifetime, would you let me?

-----------------------------------------------------

We went to our grandparents' place today.

Looking at my brother and my cousin play the cars and planes that I used to play made me think as if it were yesterday...

After dinner, I went on to do up an e-mail and reading a book, the rest of my family were watching the last episode of The Little Nyonya. We didn't talk much to my grandparents. That was it, about 2 hours. Time just flew.

My grandma's dishes never failed to be less spectacular. There was so much love in the food...

I thought I could have done more, talked to them more...

I'll do more while I still can.

There was no one who enquired about our booth... It seems that the turn up wasn't the same as what was predicted by the teachers. Perhaps the date was wrongly placed, resulting in the lack of publicity.

Nevertheless, CJC Shooting Club gave their best and all of us had lots of fun! :D It would only be an experience gained for all of us for the upcoming CCA Bazaar.

Well done guys!

Thank you all for coming and giving your best!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I bused back with Jon and Junyi, and headed for Amplify Fridays. I was glad that Josh came too. It's his first time for Amplify sessions and I bet it wouldn't be his last! :)

We'll grow in faith together.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm simply tired. One whole day, a few days back with 3-4 hours of rest.

It's time to SLEEP.
