Well well well... I was just resting on my pillow and SUDDENLY, this one question came into my mind and I thought that I should give my views on this THOUGHT-PROVOKING question!! :D
And the million-dollar question is......
Q: "Does having more options make someone more rational in making a decision?"
Hard to answer right?
Hehe..
Here's what I think.
First of all, when one has more decisions, he has more knowledge of the situation, definitely. And what's more, he is able to compare one option he has with another, and then choose the best option that suits him for that particular situation, during that particular moment in his life. He might possibly encounter the same options, but his decision to choose which option may differ for another phase of his life.
Studies
Now, let's see where this question will take us when we bring it into the simple arena of studies. Take for instance, a person who scores straight A's for his A'level exam. He surely has all the options there for him to apply for a particular University course he wants to, or even, study abroad if he can afford that. A long list of options he has with him! But the next question many people would ask him would be, "What do you want to do?" or "Which ONE will you choose?". If he is someone who already knows what he wants to do in the future, he would, 99.999%, apply for the faculty of his dream.
That would only be logical, wouldn't it? Yes it would. But would that be rational? It is still dubitable. He might neglect and not give the slightest considerations to the other options that he has right before him, and just stick to whatever he initially wanted. Well, it is not wrong to "pursue your dream", as some people would put it. But I believe that the very fact that he neglected his other options in pursue of his dream might possibly a flaw in his decision making, and at the end of the day, he would be making and irrational decision, despite the listless options he has.
Now, we shall put this example up against a person who has scored almost as well as the other guy but is unfortunate to only have 1 choice available to him.
My goodness.
That would mean to choose the one and only choice that he has whether he likes it or not! Horrible. Well this is really the extreme case, but it wouldn't happen, thankfully! There would be more than one option available, at least 2, definitely.
So if a person with 2 options thinks and considers both his options first, and then chooses the one he thinks best suits him, he will be making a rational decision because he has CONSIDERED about the other option.
So far so good?
Relationships
Oh. Here comes the confusing part!!
Why??
Because we are dealing with creatures of feelings!
Just imagine:
If you are just an option of the person whom you like, how would you feel? Naturally, everyone wouldn't like that sort of feeling. That's because they are not the products you see on the shelves of the supermarkets. They are not the shoes you see on display, nor the bags, nor the cars.. WE are not products!
But if we have the whole world having one option, a.k.a., no options, would we still be making a rational decision?
Are rational decisions made based on comparisons with something else on the same level?
Perhaps this is true.
Well, actually, it is.
But the thing about having options in a relationship, would very often make one cocky, or superior in a situation, that they are in CONTROL of what is happening, and they can do what they want, in any way that they want to. No offence to the ladies, but very often, because of our intrinsic nature, ladies generally are the ones who have the options, rather than us men.
The problem here, is that when one can't care less about the other options that one has, he or she would, in one way or other, be hurting them. Well, there's no time to explain that aspect on how to do it the right way right now, because it would take up too much of this post. But nevertheless, empathize, and consider their feelings too.
Back to the question "Does having more options make one more rational in making decisions?", yes it does, even in relationships.
In an educated society, and in reality, for the matter of fact, we won't hear people go round saying "love at first sight" anymore, or at least, it is not that common a sight. There is just so many people in this world, and there is enough people who come into our lives for us to have 'options' to choose from. Isn't it? Depending on how many, how big, and who our social circles are and comprise, the person whom we would choose as our life-long partner would have to come from one of these circles.
So, the point here is that, love is NOT blind. If you say it is, then it really isn't love.
When you begin to choose your life-long partner, CONSIDER the options that you have, and come to a rational decision. What I mean by consider is to really consider their true qualities, and not what's cute about them for the moment, (as learnt from Amp!), because these are the qualities that you will see in them for the rest of your life-time with them.
Well, and the only way, is to be friends first! :D
This is how a close girl-friend of mine would put it: "If you know that he/she is the one for you, why not spend quite a bit of time being friends and growing together in the friendship? Anyway, you guys will spend the rest of your life together, isn't it?"
That STEP of being friends first, is a LEAP of faith.
To end off, I'll share a quote of my own:
"Love is a rational feeling, beyond reason."
