Impression

Impression is the kind of thing you get from someone when he or she does something good, or something bad, something pleasant, or something unpleasant. Most impression that we get of a person is picked up by our subconsciousness, although our consciousness tries to rationalise that impression we have of that particular person.

An analogy to illustrate impression could be to picture an apple. The apple that you are currently visualising in your mind is red, shiny, with slight streaks of yellow near the stalk of the apple. To you, the apple looks like a normal apple, and it is possibly delicious. That, is your impression of the apple.

However, when we take this exercise a little further by you holding on to the stalk of the apple and turning it 180 degrees round, you then begin to realise that the other half of the apple isn't there. What you see is the yellowish flesh of the apple that has been slightly oxidised, and the core of the apple with a few apple seeds. I would suppose your mind would have pieced both impressions too quickly to have realised that your mind has generated the second impression you had on the apple. The reason for this is: Actualisation. That is when people go "Oh...I didn't know".

Impression can sometimes give one a good judgement of another person. Certain direct clues we pick up are more obvious when it comes to provocation. A man charging at another dude holding a knife would be the extreme example of provocation. Unfortunately, most of the time, the kinds of impression generated by our potent minds are just too judgemental that we begin to stereotype people, label them, and worse, dismiss them. We tend to be so myopic in our perspective, so affixed with what we think we know that we forget to look at the other side of the apple. We tend to assume.

Depending on an individual's character and their level of situational objectivity, the first impression might or might allow subsequent impressions to pave their way into the irrational minds of humans. After all, what do we know about that someone? And do we know what we know about someone is absolutely right? Without realising the hard truth that imperfect knowledge is perpetually present, we would merely make ourselves arrogant bastards who are ever so ready to condemn anyone for their "wrong" actions. I am not making the claim that we should be accepting of everything people do. But what I want you, and whoever you think this post might be pertinent to, to know that one shouldn't be too quick to judge and pass comments or rumours about someone else. Do not neglect their faults, but let your heart be wider so as to forgive. If you still so ready to judge a person, be even readier to let that judgement go.

Impressions become stronger and more developed when the demeanour of a person is repeated. An impression that is in development would cause expectations of a person to arise as a "trend" has been observed over time. Good impressions are developed over repeatedly doing deeds that are deemed appropriate. These good impressions would then translate to something we all know: Trust. Trust has to be earned. Conversely, bad impressions are stamped in the minds of people when they see consecutive "screw-ups". It is in such situations where you might need to weigh the trust earned for someone, and the unpleasant incidents that have happened, to rationalise your impression. But sometimes, a person might be just a total failure, or a total disappointment, and maybe, you would have to disregard all of your previous impressions of him/her, and give that person the chance to prove himself/herself in what he/she does.

And that requires Faith.

I think I've babbled too much today in such a "chim" way.

Just for your own sanity's sake, there are certain things you might see upfront, which you can't take too literally. Sometimes it concerns you, other times it doesn't. Only close friends will know what I mean, or those who bother asking, I might share the hidden stories behind what I write. Like it or not, that's just the way I express myself.

This is just the way I think.
